Infusion Furniture Line | 2009 | Blue Pine
Designed in collaboration with designers Shiela Tse and Tina Kao, and wood engineer Luke Opac. The Infusion line was made specifically for Far Coast Coffee, the official coffee brewer of the Olympics (and owned by Coca Cola), for promotional use during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, BC Canada. We took its brand and philosophy and translated it into two chairs, a standing conference table, and a small coffee table. The unique fan patterns found on the furniture was a stylized version of the Far Coast logo. Blue Pine was used to help promote awareness of the epidemic caused by the Pine Beetle. As a requirement, the chairs and tables are all flat-packed assembled for ease of production and transportation. The asymmetrical design of the chair allows two variations to be manufactured with minimal added costs, while adding various configurations to create more unique settings for display. A small production run (100 chairs, 60 conference tables, and 30 coffee tables) was manufactured and displayed in various locations around the Vancouver area including the Athlete’s Villages and various Olympic stadiums during the events.
The process was very involved in this short 4 month project. Starting with sketches, small scale foam models were then created before going into many full scale wooden mockups. Models were refined to get the best proportions needed. An adjustable seat jig was created to get the perfect ergonomic angles and measurements. 3d modeling was used to quickly engineer how it would be flat packed and the best hardware locations. Many options were tested to remove any aesthetic compromise over assembly and strength.
