Pirch Serving Ware | 2010 | Reclaimed Wood Veneer
Designed in collaboration with Sepehr Jalili. It uses reclaimed wood to repurpose off cut waste from a cabinet manufacturer as well as bringing retail costs down. Pirch is a set of three trays; one main serving tray and two smaller serving plates. The serving plates pirches on top of the tray when not in use. Holes were ergonomically placed to allow a comfortable thumb rest that stabilizes the trays while serving dishes.
The project's objective is an exercise to bring a design into a production-ready state that is below a $50 retail cost. Molds and jigs were developed to allow efficient and accurate production. Development started with typical hand sketches and 3D modeling. Many physical prototypes were then created to find the best dimensions for aesthetics, ergonomics, and strength. Once the design was finalized, templates and molds were refined to get the most efficiency for a small-scale production.
